Journey to Bethlehem ~ Movie Review and Digital Code Giveaway

The story of the birth of Jesus has been told in many different films, but I never seen it in musical form. My daughter and I are very interested in musicals so we were eager to see Journey to Bethlehem after seeing the trailer. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out below.

However, the movie was not coming to our local theater until the first week of December. So while we waited for the movie we found the soundtrack to listen to on Amazon Music. It immediately became a favorite on our playlist.

Journey to Bethlehem stars some familiar faces from Hollywood and the Christian music arena. Hollywood actor Antonio Banderas plays King Herod, Joel Smallbone singer from King and Country plays his son, and Christian rapper Lecrae plays the angel Gabriel. While I am not familiar with the other actors they did a great job with the singing and acting in this film.

Please note that this is a movie, there are liberties taken with parts of the movie that the Bible doesn’t cover. But that being said I would not say this makes the movie unfit to watch, it does stay true to the story of the birth of Jesus.

Synopsis of the Film:

Mary is a young woman who is arranged to marry a man Joesph. Before they are wed, the Angel Gabriel comes to marry and tells her that she will give birth to a son. This of course stirs up a controversy since she is not married yet, not only does Mary need a tremendous amount of faith in God but so does Joseph to stay with Mary and marry her.

Upon seeing the star prophesized in the Old Testament, the Wise Men on a journey westward to the land of King Herod. King Herod was not a man who was willing or happy to share his title of King. When the Wise Men mentioned they followed the star to worship the King who was to be born, Herod became vengeful.

The movie is filled with songs and dances that help to elevate the story and the characters’ emotions. There are two instances in the movie that greatly struck me. The first was when Mary looked at Joseph and said “I’m not the only one who was chosen for this”. I think this was such a good line because I think in the birth of Jesus we focus a lot on the faith of Mary and forget that Joseph had to have a tremendous amount of faith as well to follow what Gabriel told him. The second moment that made me emotional was The Nativity Song sung during the birth of Jesus and when they joined together in the chorus it moved me to tears. My daughter and husband said they both got chills. It just reminded me how wonderful Jesus is and His love for us all.

This movie is family-friendly, my 8-year-old loves it as does my 13-year-old.
