Graphic novels are a great way to engage a reluctant reader. They also can make history and biographies more appealing to children. Timberdoodle gave us the opportunity to review Eric’s Greatest Race by Tim Challies, illustrated by Paul Mignard. The combination of storytelling and illustrations makes Eric’s life accessible and engaging, especially for children who may find traditional biographies challenging. The book is just over 100 pages, it is not overwhelming but insightful.

As a homeschooling mom, I’m always looking for books that do more than teach facts. I love finding stories that bring history to life while encouraging my children to think about their own faith, character, and choices. This book offers a wonderful opportunity to explore all three!

Who is Eric Liddell?
Eric Liddell was a Scottish Olympic runner whose life was shaped by his love for Christ. Many people know his story from the movie Chariots of Fire, which highlights his decision not to compete in his strongest Olympic event because it was scheduled for a Sunday.
But Eric’s story goes far beyond the racetrack.
After winning an Olympic gold medal in the 400 meters at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Eric chose to devote his life to missionary service in China. During World War II, he was imprisoned in a Japanese-run internment camp, where he continued to encourage and serve those around him.

Lessons In Faith
This book is a great read aloud or for individual reading. It provides wonderful talking points with children, especially in a time when sports can be set higher than God. Many families now choose sports or sport events over God. But through this story we see that Eric chose to live differently. This is a very big struggle in today’s culture and Eric’s story can inspire children to choose God and live out their faith. Here are some things you could talk about:
1. Putting God first
Eric’s decision to honor his convictions rather than compete on Sunday provides an opportunity to discuss what it means to put our faith ahead of popularity, pressure, or personal ambition.
2. Choosing faithfulness over fame
Winning Olympic gold was an incredible accomplishment, but Eric’s life did not revolve around his athletic success. His commitment to missionary work reminds readers that our gifts and abilities can be used to serve God and others.
3. Serving others through difficult circumstances
Even while imprisoned during the war, Eric continued to care for and encourage those around him. His example demonstrates that we can still make a difference in the lives of others, even when our own circumstances are difficult.
4. Living out our faith
Eric’s story shows that faith is more than something we talk about. It influences our decisions, our priorities, and the way we treat people.
Final Thoughts
My son enjoys reading graphic novels because the illustrations provide not only a great visual but also break up the text. This is a black and white graphic novel, my son reads plenty that are only black and white so that wasn’t an issue.
Erics life reminds us that faithfulness isn’t measured by medals, recognition, or worldly success. It is demonstrated through the choices we make and the way we love and serve others, even during difficult circumstances. This was a great graphic novel to add to our home library.
