Book Description:

With so many distortions of the essence of a woman, today more than ever, women need to ruthlessly examine their perceptions and reality of being a wife, and then align them with Truth so that they may become the best version of themselves as God had intended them to be.

In The “Sorta” Good Wife, Kim Hess explores how A Good Wife, as described in Proverbs 31:10-31, beautifully portrays the dignity of being a spouse as a wife. However, this expectation gets warped by trauma, sin, fears, and lies, and many women do not know how to embrace and enjoy this vocation. A woman must align herself to Truth and rely on His power, not her own. The Lord desires to be a part of every aspect of daily life and every season of her life, so that she may reach her full potential.

My Thoughts

If you belong to a church or a Christian circle you are most likely aware of the Proverbs 31 wife. If you are like me, you love the qualities mentioned BUT it seems almost impossible to have them. One line in the book that really helped me to focus on the devotional in a new way was “we can reason the good wife does not necessarily attain and manage all attributes at one time”. PHEW this leads to a sigh of relief because there have been seasons in my life when I was not waking up before my household. But as Kim explains to us, this expectation that we put on ourselves is a trap set by the devil to place our worth on what we achieve in life compared to other women. This has never been more true than in today’s current society, social media has created a continuous trap for women. I know that I can also fall into this comparison trap and it really affects my relationship with my family and God. I start putting my effort in meeting these wild expectations that really don’t fit into our life in the first place.

When this book arrived, I made a commitment to really work hard in putting more time into reading, studying, and applying God’s word. It has been such a blessing to read this devotional. It breaks down the verses, helping you to understand the context because these were written a long time ago and in a different culture. But they hold relevance for our lives today and it was a great way to study and look at this passage. It also has some reflection questions at the end of each verse if you want to further your journey. This is a great book for any Christian woman regardless if she is seasoned in her walk with God or just starting out.
