My Thoughts

I know that movie is set to release on International Women’s Day and it is about a woman who has great accomplishments. However, please don’t mistake this movie for a “feminist movement” or push for that. While Francesca Cabrini is female, she does not use her gender as a cry for her mission to succeed. She advocated for people, the poor, and at the time the Italian Immigrants in New York.

When first introduced to Cabrini, we learn that her hope was to be part of a group of women missionaries (a group of Nuns in Italy where she is Mother Cabrini) to travel to China and work with the poor. She is denied this request and asks to speak to the Pope. When meeting with the Pope he read a letter from a box explaining the hardships in New York for Italian Immigrants. He tells her that the box is full of these letters and that he will grant her permission to go to New York to help the Italian Immigrants.

From the moment the sisters arrive in New York, they are met with challenges. This movie is one not only of perseverance but hope. Cabrini is met time and time again with rejection or blockade after blockade in her attempts to better the lives of the orphans of Italian Immigrants and the immigrants themselves. Overall, I enjoyed this movie and the way Cabrini stayed faithful and committed to God’s word in helping the poor.
