Our kids are pretty artistic, they love to create things through building, painting, or drawing. There’s something special about sitting down with a simple craft and watching it transform into something beautiful. As we approach a new school year I was looking forward to introducing something new and thanks to Timberdoodle I found it in a beginners quilling kit. What is Quilling?
If you’ve never heard of quilling before it is the art of creating designs by rolling, shaping, and arranging thin strips of paper. Those simple strips can be turned into flowers, leaves, animals, decorative shapes, and more. My daughter and I are amazed at how many beautiful designs can be made with just rolling paper. So Many Learning Opportunities
In many of our homeschool lessons, I try to incorporate one lesson over several learning areas and quilling can do this as well. Children can practice skills in many different areas such as the following:
- Fine motor skills through rolling and shaping paper
- Hand-eye coordination while working with small pieces
- Patience and concentration as they complete each design
- Creativity by experimenting with colors and shapes
- Following directions while learning new techniques
- Geometry by exploring circles, curves, symmetry, and patterns
It’s a fun way to break away from book work but still actually be learning!
Final Thoughts
So quilling might not be for everyone, it does require some patience and attention. While I think children over the age of 8 can use this kit with some guidance from a parent, the amount of time a child will sit and complete a project will vary. I can see some children sitting for an extended period of time working on a project while others might take a few days to complete a project working in small time increments. Either way will work just fine, this is a project that can be started, take a break and come back to finish an hour or a day later.
Quilling is very interesting, the shapes that can be created from just rolling paper still amazes me. It’s a fun and unique 3D way to create a card or picture. While there are techniques to making certain shapes, there is so much individual creativity that takes place. While our kids didn’t make a particular project, instead we just worked on learning the craft. However, in the future quilling will be used to create some cards or other artwork. The picture below shows one design that was made, it was so cool to see the design from just rolling paper and shaping it a little.
