Five Minute Friday ~ Worship

For many when they hear the word worship they might immediately think of singing. The word worship is often paired with Praise and Worship music. But worship is so much more, at least to me. I enjoy my time of worship with the Lord because for me it doesn’t just include singing songs.

Worship time for me encompasses a lot, spending time in God’s word, praying, praising Him, and sometimes music. The time spent alone with the Lord is a great time of worship for me. It is the way I can recharge my soul, it is how I release my anxieties, thoughts, and fears. Yes, it is that time when I bow down to the Lord and thank Him for everything He has done for me and others I bring before Him. It is the time when I let myself be authentic.

So I might be sharing an unpopular opinion here but I much rather worship to the hymns than some modern day “worship” music. Do I listen to contemporary Christian music? Absolutely. I thoroughly enjoy much of it but I don’t always feel it brings me to a great place of worship in the way some of the hymns do. When I reach a place of full worship, I see myself face down for the Lord, in total submission.

Come, let's worship and bow down, Let's kneel before the LORD our Maker.
Psalm 95:6 NASB

  1. Yes, worship is time spent with God. With regard to music I am enjoying Moody Radio’s new Majesty broadcast that features hymns that I have known from childhood. It is soothing as I am in the car running errands.

  2. I have to say as a younger person (30ish) I have heard the hymns occasionally, as we spent one year at a Presbyterian church when I was 12 and they still had real hymn books, but mostly heard the more contemporary songs or the older choruses as our Baptist church was stuck in the 80s. Yesterday I was listening to a worship album by Robin Mark that I remember Mum playing and he had a hymn in there about the cross, I can’t remember which one, I want to go look it up and write out the lyrics because they really struck me.

I remember a story I heard of churches in England who took out of their hymnals all the songs about the blood and cross because they thought it was grotesque and within 12 months they had all closed down! There is a power in the singing about the blood and cross that we truly don’t realise. FMF neighbour 8

  3. I can’t abide with worship singing,

but that’s not what it appears.

Thing is, I have this noisy ringing

    always in my ears,

and I cannot just listen ’round

    that constant overtone,

    a harsh and distancing sound

that can make me feel oh so alone,

and I must find within this thing

    somewhere, the angel choir,

try to discern that which they sing

    and use that to inspire

my heart in giving silent praise

through what are my hardest days.
