The Chosen: The Last Supper ~ Episode One Review

Get ready for the three part series from The Chosen depicting one of the most pivotal weeks in the life of Jesus and His followers. The Chosen: The Last Supper is releasing in theaters in 3 parts! Part One (episodes 1-2)
releases on March 28; Part Two (episodes 3-5) releases on April 4; and Part Three(episodes 6-8) releases on April 11.

What is so unique about The Chosen?

Since the first season The Chosen has captivated viewers, Christians and non-Christians have been drawn into the historical drama based on the life of Jesus. What is also unique is the series depicts the life of Jesus as seen through His followers. Set against the backdrop of Roman oppression in first-century Israel, the seven-season series shares an authentic and intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings. It is no wonder that with over 250 million viewers (as of 7/27/24), The Chosen is one of the most-watched shows in the world.

Synopsis: The table is set. The people of Israel welcome Jesus as king while his disciples anticipate his crowning. But instead of confronting Rome he turns the tables on the Jewish religious festival. Their power threatened, the country’s religious and political leaders will go to any length to ensure this Passover meal is Jesus’ last. Shot in a beautiful cinematic format, The Chosen: Last Supper brings the most pivotal week in history to audiences in this special three-part theatrical release.

My Thoughts

Well, if you have read the Bible or know the story of Jesus nothing I tell you is a spoiler. But I realize The Chosen has reached an audience that might not be aware of Holy Week and all the events that took place. For this review, I was given the opportunity to view Part One: Episode One, so I will speak of that only.

My favorite part of The Chosen is the characters and their development. Yes, I have read the Bible and the Gospels but there is something different when you see it. Watching Jesus interact with Peter, John, James, Matthew, Mary, and the other disciples reminds me that He is relational. He wants a relationship with us, His care and love for people is revealed in the Bible but it is put to life in this series.

Episode One shows the Triumphant Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The picture below shows the waving of the palm fronds and the putting of coats on the road. There was some scene setting at the beginning of the episode showing The Last Supper but the episode jumps back to Jesus entering the city and the Pharisees telling Him to leave.

Jesus, knowing what is coming, tries to tell the people that He will only be here for a little while longer. This of course confused some of the disciples as they kept wondering why He was saying that. There is one scene where one follower seems to begin to understand that Jesus’ life is soon to end. All I can say it is gut wrenching and heart breaking because even though I know what is coming my heart already aches.

  1. I have not seen The Chosen yet; I will not be able to see the new season in theaters, I will wait for it on TV, or online someplace. ~Lisa Brown
