Five Minute Friday ~ Fight

Oh, the timing of this word fight, it comes around the time of the holidays. Now I know for some the holidays can bring out a fight in families, which is sad and unfortunate. I can say, I know that side of things. Our flesh is selfish and people can get selfish around this time of the year. For some, it is just inevitable and I think this is why so many dislike seeing Christmas decorations or hearing Christmas music because it stirs negative emotions.

When I look at the holidays now, I see a fight between the world and God. The world wants us to rush around, run through the motions, and check off the boxes. The gifts, the food, and the traveling from place to place. At the end of Christmas Day, did you check off all the boxes? Are you completely exhausted? Most likely you are because you have fought against the actual way God intended us to spend the day.

Christmas is a day to rest, reflect, embrace, marvel, sit, relax, and take in the birth of our Savior, Jesus. But we fight against all this by doing what the world wants and expects. No wonder we tend to be anxious about the holiday or look at it with less than wonder and joy. As I get older, and spend more time reading God’s word, His will for His people to draw closer to Him, and align with His ways, this fight becomes greater. God is fighting for me and my family to rest in His day. Our kids are getting older and they have expressed how they dislike all the rush at Christmas time. The Lord is speaking to them also on this fight of worldly expectations vs. God’s will.

But my five minutes of writing is up, this prompt is part of the Five Minute Friday Community. Check out more posts or join us!!

  1. “It is so true how we “Christmas is a day to rest, reflect, embrace, marvel, sit, relax, and take in the birth of our Savior.” May we fight against the urge to rush around, for then we will miss the true meaning of the day.

  2. When I see the Christmas lights

I think of where I used to work,

the fetid hell of jungle fights,

and I can become a jerk

when the ghosts do come a-calling

and it’s war that I recall

in time and place that were appalling

while America was at the mall,

so please don’t send an invitation

    to a festive party seat,

    for in your Christmas celebration

you would not enjoy to meet

the likes of me, or my kin,

whose war we weren’t allowed to win
