“Fighting for the Soul of Your Child” by Jimmy and Karen Evans is a book for parents who are seeking to nurture and raise their child(ren) in today’s ever-evolving world. It’s no secret that parenting is a tough job, today our children are faced with so many messages that go against God and His word. Having a strong faith in your home and in your parenting is a foundation needed to help our children keep God in their lives and hearts. While reading parenting books is something we tend to turn to, in all honesty, the best guidebook is the Bible.

But as a culture, we tend to turn to books written by notable people and teachers. There is nothing wrong with this but with any book of faith, I think it is important to be strong in your faith or at least have someone to talk to about ideas or subject matter in a book. I say this from experience that when I was young in the faith I probably didn’t question what I was reading from a notable pastor or Bible teacher. This is related to my childhood as I was not raised in a Christian home in the sense that we practiced the word of God.
My parents separated when I was young and growing up I was not raised with God as the center of our home. I was never taught much about God but I was never discouraged from attending church with friends. I gave my life to Jesus when I was 23 before I became a mom. Since I didn’t have knowledge of Biblical parenting, I relied on other parents in my church or books. Now that my faith is deeper, I know where to look in the Bible for God’s guidance but I always find it helpful to call on those in my church family too.
Jimmy and Karen Evans, are respected marriage and parenting experts with over 40 years of experience. They do have several experiences to share and sometimes it is nice to not feel like you are the only one that has experienced a certain issue. For me, the biggest takeaway is the scripture shared. I tend to go to my Bible and highlight or read the verse. I might find something I really need to hear from God’s word. So while this book provides some good insight and definitely highlights the need for a foundation of God in your home it’s not a replacement for the Bible.
